Recently, 7th graders were tasked with building a mechanical hand. Students completed research into how they could build a mechanical out of recycled goods and other materials that were readily available in the EXPO room. The goal was for students to design a hand that was flexible enough with the design to work in different scenarios. We examined many applications where such a hand could be useful and to what groups of the community where this would be useful.
Last week we had our final challenge for their build. Students had to pick up a milk jug, soda can, and a book. It was an interesting project because the best answers to the problem were the most simple design; this only became apparent when we began testing. Only the most clever students were able to complete the challenge with a 100% success rate. Great job 7th grade, this was a new fun and challenging task to task on with you.
